artist statement
reflections on my road towards realisme
I consider myself self-taught, disregarding the two years in the 70s spent at the Beaux Arts School in Luxembourg. Everything I accomplish and create happens in the mindset of -learning by doing- learning, from my failures and successes. Contact with other artists, nowadays possible everywhere in the world, is very inspiring and allows the improvement of techniques through constant constructive criticism. I am absolutely fascinated by any new method or the transposition of techniques used from one medium to another. My brushstroke will always be recognizable, but life is far too short not to explore the terra incognita, to try marginal techniques, and certainly too short to work only in the calm waters of the known.
What matters to me above all is respect for for wildlife and nature. The arrogance of humanity, considering itself to be a superior being, is unbearable to me. This notion instilled by various religions for centuries is proved more and more to be wrong, and the horrors committed in the name of some deity are described in all history books in the world. I am not pointing fingers at anyone; I am pointing at all of us. In my works, I try to give a voice to these creatures, to show their beauty, their intelligence, but especially their distress in front of mankind chasing them from their territory, and worse, eliminating them for obscure economic reasons. The ecological impact is huge, and it is incomprehensible to see that after all that science we believe we have acquired, humanity still does not realize that it's self-destructing. Nature will always survive, humanity will be wiped off this planet by itself in a few.
The concept of subordination implies for me treating every subordinate, whether human, element, fauna, or flora, as a 'good head of the family', which, you will certainly agree with me, is not the case. This notion of responsibility has slipped through the nets of the big fishermen.
To these thoughts I add my maxime: one life, don't waste it, be worth it.
